New Year's Resolutions. Part 1. Internet time sucks and reconsidering the "social".

I don’t know how many of my new year’s resolutions I will be putting online this year, but this one I felt like I should blog about.

It all started with other resolutions that I will not get into here, but it culminated in a rather simple resolution. Waste less time online. I found myself just blankly staring at a screen, chatting about nothing important, looking online for nothing I could determine. After the birth of Elliot, I began rethinking priorities. Which caused me to start spending weekends offline.

And I watched movies, I read. Both things I haven’t done in a while. I built legos with the kids, which never are able to “find time” to do. I realized that as I get older, my time becomes more precious and that I was wasting it online.

This is not to say I am shunning the internet. I am not. But using the internet for research, or for legitimate endeavors is different than just clicking around.

So I have been reevaluating my net usage and am jettisoning time sucks. First order of business “the social”. Social networking sites and the like. I have been looking at the sites and seeing what I get out of them versus time put in. As a result I have deleted my twitter account. I found myself reading twitter and not even being entertained most of the time, but spending a lot of time reading it. I also suspended my facebook account. I am having a harder time with facebook, as I use it for promotion of music, and seeing what local promoters are doing etc. I also have a couple of old friends who live far away that I keep up with. So we will see if I reactivate that account.

I am also jettisoning a lot of my RSS feeds. All of this should be a positive as it will allow me to catch up on my huge backlog of movies to watch, books to read, get me some quality time with my family and possibly allow me to work on my music more.
